Most kits contain only the vinyl head and limbs. To finish your baby you will usually need:
- A cloth body. Some kits include one; otherwise buy a body to match the kit size and limb type (3/4 or full limbs).
- Paints. Heat-set paints are cured in a domestic oven between layers; air-dry paints need no oven. Either way you build up skin tones in thin layers.
- Eyes. Open-eyed kits need glass or acrylic eyes in the right size. Sleeping kits don’t.
- Hair. Mohair rooted with a fine needle gives the most realistic finish. Painted hair is quicker and easier for a first kit.
- Weighting. Fine glass beads or granules in small bags give the doll the heavy, floppy feel of a real newborn.
- Finishing touches. A matt varnish, a magnet for a dummy, and newborn-size clothes complete the look.
